Sharmila Nezovic is a ‘conceptual artist’, gaining a reputation for transposing contemporary ideas around ‘cultural ecology’ into her abstract Paintings in oils and industrial mixed media on canvas.
She grew up in Melbourne. Her art studies began with a Dip. Art from The VCA (Melb); Post-grad. Painting, at the New York Studio School (Manhattan, USA); and, she holds an MCA from James Cook University (Nth Qld). She now lives in Brisbane.
Her art investigates the relationships between architectural spaces and their perceived social narratives. She seeks to excavate traces of humanity within the dense urban overlay surrounding us. Often the compositions expose a raw nerve, yet echo with vestiges of the familiar – & in doing so, reveal a fresh, bold perspective.
Sharmila’s practice explores boundaries between ‘beauty and trauma’, questioning the pervasive disconnect with the natural world. Re-seeking however, a tactile sensuality, amidst all the manufactured, urban materiality of our surrounds.
In responding to random aspects of the built environment, Sharmila’s creative motivation is far from dream-like… She says, her connection to Joan Miro’s thoroughly modernist works is especially through his use of symbolic, schematic language and the way it resonates with the sub-conscious. His highly original designs and pleasure in using bright colours, blend his vision of the harshness of modern life with a finely balanced and instantly recognisable, sophisticated, poetic impulse.
